Within the reality of the periphery of many Brazilian metropolises, public schools often act as important social centres, marking the presence of the state. Their implementation has been tested and carried out by initiatives of consecutive governments, thus regularly suffering from discontinuity, as well as from regional variations, due to changing political power and priorities.
